2012 Rowan's Chardonnay

Rowan's Vineyard lies on the northeastern edge of the Russian River Valley, just to the south of Healdsburg city limits on Limerick Lane. This vineyard is planted to a wide variety of grapes, but this Chardonnay is one of the newer plantings in the field. The Chardonnay occupies a small, north-facing rise in the middle of the vineyard.

The Franciscan soils are part of an alluvial fan that borders a small, seasonal tributary to the Russian River. The coarse gravel and river stones embedded in the soil help limit excessive vigor, which in turn means that the vines focus on fruit production rather than vegetative growth.

These Chardonnay vines, all Dijon clones, are planted extraordinarily densely; this type of vineyard arrangement promotes intense intervine competition. This one-upmanship reduces yields substantially and creates small clusters of intensely-flavored berries that give this wine its concentration and focus.
